STATS SA: THE ACCOMMODATION INDUSTRY EMPLOYS 100 000+ PEOPLE & GROWING
Also in the week, Statistics South Africa released key statistics for the tourism accommodation industry that saw a 6.7% per annum income increase over 2012/2015 period. The total income for the industry in 2015 was R47.2 billion, compared to R38.9 billion in 2012. Hotels, motels and inns dominated the industry with their profit income of R34 billion collectively. Expenditure in the accommodation industry in 2015 amounted to R41.2 billion. The largest expenditure was on salaries and wages, purchases, interest paid and water and electricity. A total of 109 196 people were employed in the accommodation industry by 30 June 2015. Employment in this sector industry increased by 1.8% per annum as compared to the 103 492 employees reported in the 2012 survey.
