WILL AN AIRPORT COURT GO A LONG WAY TO REDUCING AVIATION-RELATED CRIME IN SA?
One of the most ambitious steps to deal with incidents of crime in and around OR Tambo International Airport (ORTIA) announced by Police Minister Fikile Mbalula on 21 July was the possibility of establishing a judicial court to deal with aiport-related security offences.
ORTIA plays a significant role in South Africa’s economy, not only as a national key point but also as a transport hub and gateway to Africa. This means that it is of the utmost importance that drastic measures are taken to ensure the safety and security of travellers and staff at and around ORTIA and other airports around the country. One such measure is the possible establishment of a court to deal with aviation-related security offences. If implemented, it will provide a dedicated judicial effort to bring offenders of crimes like follow-home robberies, human and drug trafficking, and even terrorism, to swift justice.
