YOUR THOUGHTS: IS THE REVISED VISION & MISSION OF THE NTTS TOO INWARD-LOOKING?
According to the final draft of the 2017 National Tourism Sector Strategy (NTSS) gazetted for public comment in May, the changed domestic and global environment has led to the formulation of a new vision and mission for the Strategy. The revised vision and mission has more emphasis on South Africa’s own developmental priorities and is less externally focused on global rankings.

Do you think this is an effective vision and mission statement to follow in today’s environment, where being globally competitive is so important?

Vision statement from the previous version of the NTSS (2010 – 2010)
“To be a top 20 tourism destination in the world by 2020.”

Revised Vision statement in the final draft 2017 NTSS
A rapidly and inclusively growing tourism economy that leverages South Africa’s competitive advantages in nature, culture and heritage; supported by innovative products and service excellence.

Mission statement from the previous version of the NTSS (2010 – 2010)
“Significantly growing a sustainable tourism economy in South Africa, with domestic, regional and international components; based on innovation, service excellence, meaningful participation and partnerships.”

Revised Mission statement in the final draft 2017 NTSS
To increase the direct contribution of tourism to the economy through collaborative planning; and the implementation of agreed priority actions.”

Food 4 thought: What about sustainable tourism development as part of the NTSS mission?
The revised mission welcomes collaboration, but doesn’t fully emphasise the principle of sustainable tourism development. Do you agree?

Let us know what you think about the revised vision and mission statements of the final draft NTSS. To ensure that we meet the deadline for formal submission to NDT, please send us your input by Wednesday, 19 July 2017 to pr@tbcsa.travel.
